One of the many great things about living in California is the opportunity to do “mini-vacs” to places like Tahoe or Yosemite or anywhere in wine country. Having pretty much exhausted the well-worn road to Napa, we tend to push further north to places like the Anderson Valley between Alexander Valley and Mendocino. Wineries here are more casual, laid back and less crowded. This time we spent a few nights at the lovely, peaceful and tasteful Madrones in Philo, CA.We rented a room in The Kitchen for two nights and enjoyed the view overlooking the pond and gardens. Its a small boutique hotel created by a builder and decorator, and it shows in the room’s tasteful appointments. Classy without stuffiness.
